Garments from a Forrest Gump Viewpoint
If you haven’t heard of the movie, Forrest Gump,
you should rent it and watch. It’s
a classic in doing the right thing, never giving up, being loyal to your
friends, and viewing the world and the people in it from a commonsense
perspective.
I so loved
that movie when I saw it; I decided to apply the basics to my line of
work, the garment business. So I’m listing 30+ years of observations of
outfitting people in corporate clothing from a Forrest Gump viewpoint.

You’re
probably the only one outside of immediate family members that care
what size you are. I don’t. I care what size I am. Your size affects
you and your opinion of yourself much more than it does others. |
 |
There
are no winners when we dress to compete. We either lose the
competition and feel bad about ourselves or win and cause someone else
to feel bad about themselves. It’s wonderful to maintain a good
image but not one so good that you can hide behind it.
|
 |
Clothes
are an accessory to the real you. And the real you is a beautiful
starting point for getting dressed.
|
 |
Don’t
say things to yourself you wouldn’t say to your best friend. Don’t
call yourself names or put yourself down. It’s a tragedy when you
start believing yourself.
|
 |
There’s
no law against wearing the same item of clothing twice in one week.
Men do it all the time. A neutral color skirt or pant can be worn
several times in a week simply by changing tops and accessories.
(Don’t forget regular laundering.)
|
 |
Take
care of yourself emotionally. A lot of important people depend on you
— starting with you. Think good thoughts about who you are, how you
look and what you deserve. Take time to take a long bubble bath now
and then. Browse an antique shop even when you don’t have time. Old
things are peaceful. Use expensive body lotion you can’t afford —
stop being practical for once.
|
 |
Try
to learn how to accept your face and body as it is now. Don’t put
off looking your best until you lose weight or cut your hair or buy
some new clothes. Forgive yourself for those extra pounds, be grateful
for good health and take a small step towards an appearance goal you
can achieve.
|
 |
Believe
people when they compliment you and use this to learn what looks best
on you.
|
 |
Don’t
deny yourself the pleasure of color or style due to your age or size.
(Use commonsense.) One of the most beautiful women I ever knew was a
size 28.
|
 |
A smile
and positive attitude is still the most affordable and most flattering
thing we will ever wear.
